  • Since April 2012 we capture most reprint information by reprint links. These can be between
    • Two sequences.
    • A sequence and an issue. This is in case no corresponding sequence in the issue exists or can be identified, but it is known that sequence is reprinted from/in parts of the issue.
    • Two issues. This is in case no corresponding sequences in both issues exist or can be identified, but it is known that part of the one issue is reprinted in the other.
  • Textual reprint notes can be used for comic material which is not in our database, either because the issue is not indexed at all (although in that case a creation of a skeleton index for the issue is preferred) or because it cannot be indexed at this stage (which is the case for newspaper strips). For newspaper strips the format is "from <comic strip> (<syndicate name>) <date>", example
    • from Calvin and Hobbes daily (Universal Press Syndicate) 1985-11-18 - 1988-10-01
  • Adding a reprint link during indexing of an issue will also result in the display of the (reversed) reprint connection on its other side. Therefore, one should (and needs to) add reprint links only to one issue of a from/in pair.
  • The only time that a sequence should contain both "from" and "in" links is when something is changed in the sequence being indexed (such as dropping some panels, redrawn hair, new dialogue, translations, etc.). In that case, the reprinted sequence becomes a new original sequence. In other words, the original sequence should show all "in" links for all reprints from it that are the same. And each reprinted sequence should show only a single "from" link (except for the situation where the reprinted sequence actually reprints multiple sequences, such as chapters that were previously separate but are combined in the reprint).
  • Further details about the reprint (e.g. to explain difference in page count or partial reprints) can be added to the notes of a reprint link.
  • When isolated panels, details from panels, and/or single pages are reprinted for the purposes of illustrating or accompanying a story, text article, forward or similar purposes, a reprint link is not allowed. The information should be mentioned in the Notes field.
  • All cover reprints of 1/4 page in size or larger will have a reprint link. Covers smaller than 1/4 page will not have a link; it is recommended that the smaller cover reprints be noted in the notes field.
  • Reprint links for sequences of type promo are displayed one-sided, i.e. on the issue display page they only show for the promo sequence, but not for the source content.

Textual Reprint Notes

The following information is in case reprint notes need to be used, this concerns comic material which is not in our database, either because the issue is not indexed at all (although in that case a creation of a skeleton index for the issue is preferred) or because it cannot be indexed at this stage (which is the case for newspaper strips).

  • This field serves to record both the original source for reprinted stories and known reprints for original stories. To easily distinguish between the two, the first word in each section in this field must be either "from" or "in". The equivalent of "from" or "in" in languages other than English may also be used. Multiple sections of the field are separated by semicolons (;).
  • If you know a story is a reprint but don't know the exact source you can index it as "from ?" and then include whatever partial information you know.
  • Most details about the reprint (such as editing or a title change) belong in the Notes field. Short notes of less than about 10 words can be put in square brackets after the reprint info.
  • Format for comics reprinted from or in other comics is: in/from Series Title (Original publisher, YYYY series) #number (optional exact date of publication) [optional short notes].
  • Format for strip reprints, with dates in ISO format, is: from Strip Title Sunday or daily as applicable (Syndicate) YYYY-MM-DD - YYYY-MM-DD [optional short notes]
  • Format for reprints from web comics, with dates in ISO format, is: from Strip Title (website) YYYY-MM-DD - YYYY-MM-DD [retrieved YYYY-MM-DD, optional short notes]. The "retrieved" date is the date that you checked the website to see the strip. This is useful for finding evidence of it later if the site is removed.
  • Format for previews is: Same as the format for comics. The preview is considered the reprint, even if it chronologically came out before the comic it is previewed from.
  • Format for the number of issues that show their volume number with the issue number is #v2#1 (including the leading #).

Examples:

  • Example 1: A story from one comic is reprinted in another with no changes.
Original: in Superman (DC, 1939 series) #3; in Superman Archives (DC, 1989 series) #1

  • Example 2: A number of stories are reprinted as one continuous story with no obvious page breaks in the reprint.
