  • Required
  • If there is no Volume Number listed in the issue, check the No volume checkbox and leave the Volume field blank, except as noted below.
  • If there is no Volume Number listed in the issue, but the Volume Number is known from another source, check the Not Printed checkbox and enter the Volume Number. Additionally, detailed source information MUST be put into the Notes field to identify where the information came from and that it is not found in the original comic issue. This applies only to data reported by the publisher itself and not from fandom or creators. Possible sources of this data are (but not necessarily limited to): other publications by the same publisher such as previous issue blurbs, house advertisements, publisher created promotional material, or publisher websites. Other possible sources are (but not necessarily limited to): publisher corporate filings, paycheck stubs, original corporate or publisher documents, copyright filings with the appropriate government office, or other government filings by the publisher. (This Volume Number will automatically be displayed in brackets.) (see Policy vote of 2015-07-19)
  • If there is no Volume Number listed in the issue, do not put a 0 in the volume field.
  • If there is a Volume Number or "Vol" listed in the indicia with an issue number, include it here.
  • If the Volume Number is the only indication of where the issue at hand lies in the series, the Volume number is used as the Issue Number and in this field.
  • If the Issue Numbers are reset at the beginning of each Volume Number, place the Volume Number in this field and check the Show volume with number checkbox.
  • When the number is listed as a Roman numeral such as "IX", enter the Arabic numeral equivalent ("9"). The Notes (Issue) field can be used to enter the number as displayed.
  • Examples
    • No volume anywhere on the issue / book:
      • Volume: leave blank
      • No volume: checked
    • Bone (tradepaperback) Volume 1 -- Volume number used as issue number and volume number (In this case, a book has only one number on it, and that number is identified as "Volume" on the book. Because our system requires an Issue number, but none exists, the “Volume” number is also used as the Issue number. The checkbox is not checked because that would mean that BOTH a Volume and Issue number exist.):
      • Volume: 1
      • Issue number: 1
      • Show volume with number: not checked'
    • Supersnipe v2#1 -- Issue number reset at each volume number, volume number used as part of issue number:
      • Volume: 2
      • Issue number: 1
      • Show volume with number: checked
    • Action Comics Volume 23 Issue 265 -- Volume number listed in indicia with an issue number:
      • Volume: 23
      • Issue number: 265
      • Show volume with number: not checked
    • Crack Comics #1 -- NO Volume number listed in comic, but sourced from U.S. Copyright office documents filed by publisher:
      • Volume: [1]
      • Issue number: 1
      • Show volume with number: not checked
      • Notes: On sale date from the publication date and the volume number found at the Catalog of Copyright Entries, Part 2, Periodicals, New Series, Volume 35, 1940, Number 2. Second class permit. Copyright number 451179. Volume number not listed in the comic indicia itself.

See the Display Volume with Issue Number examples for many more examples of the volume fields in combination with various issue number situations.
