If it is determined that the Official Name should be changed, NEVER delete the original Official Name! To make a change, ONLY update or change the Type (usually to Common Alternative Name). Then add another name and give it Type "Official Name"Any other method of changing the Official Name will cause a server error message.
If it is determined that the Official Name should be changed, select the 'is official name' for the name that is to be the new Official Name  and unselect the 'Is official name' for the old Official Name.

Note:
*You may need to add the name if it is not already in the [[Creator Names| Creator Record]].
*You cannot delete a name from a creator record if that name is linked to a credit and you cannot delete a name that has the 'is official name' flag set..
<br>
We do not have an official method of determining when the Official Name should be changed. The current ad hoc method is to post the request for the change to the GCD main mailing list ([email protected]) and see if there is general agreement to proceed with the change.

To determine what creator name should be used as the GCD Official Name, the following shall be used:

  1. If the creator has expressed a preference, and it is a name according to our rules and guidelines, we use that as the official name. If the creator's preference is in conflict with our rules and guidelines, that is, a name we would not record in that form otherwise, we decide on a case-by-case if we respect the creator's preference. In case of such a conflict we consider to adapt our rules and guidelines accordingly. The preference can stated directly by the creator, creator's family, representatives of the creator, or can be taken from published sources.
  2. If the person is recorded in the current Who's Who, use that name. Information on data organization and use of the Who's Who is at Names in Jerry Bails' Who's Who.
  3. If the person is not recorded in the current Who's Who, but is recorded at Lambiek, use that name.
  4. If the person is not recorded in either the current Who's Who or at Lambiek, but has a listing in Wikipedia, use the main listing name that corresponds to the language in which the creator's works are most often published, as it appears there.
  5. If the person is not recorded in any of the above-mentioned sources, further rules shall be determined.

If it is determined that the Official Name should be changed, select the 'is official name' for the name that is to be the new Official Name and unselect the 'Is official name' for the old Official Name.
Note:

  • You may need to add the name if it is not already in the Creator Record.
  • You cannot delete a name from a creator record if that name is linked to a credit and you cannot delete a name that has the 'is official name' flag set..

We do not have an official method of determining when the Official Name should be changed. The current ad hoc method is to post the request for the change to the GCD main mailing list ([email protected]) and see if there is general agreement to proceed with the change.
