The story of Panini Comics

A long many-year history of Marvel in our country. The heroes created since 1961 by the ingenious minds of Stan Lee & Jack Kirby landed for the first time in Italy in April 1970 when the first issue of the MAN LAND was published on the newsstands. To realize the dream was Luciano Secchi - aka Max Bunker - with his Editorial Horn , Milanese publishing house, which already included successful publications such as KRIMINAL, ALAN FORD and EUREKA.

The founding fathers: the creative team of the golden times of L'UOMO RAGNO, Stan Lee and Johnny Romita Sr.

Fascinated by such different heroes, he headed for the Marvel Universe, progressively widening the park and contributing to its definitive affirmation. The publishing house's experience ceased at the beginning of 1984 following the gradual decline of interest in superheroes, and only in the fall of 1985 a timid attempt to recover the characters of the House of Ideas was tempted by a small Umbrian publishing house , Labor , with not too encouraging results.

The Marvel Universe: an Invaluable Heritage of Stories and Characters.

It would have to wait almost two years for the Star Comics to arrive in 1987, with no certainty, a stability and a publishing standard of full respect by imposing the 72-page format, a strict attention on the translations 'Introduction of a large editorial system and extreme care in the publication of stories.

However, the situation was not as rosy as it might have appeared, since the rights to publish Marvel's material had been split between various licensees such as Play Press , Comic Art and Max Bunker Press . Different formats and prices, stories of different times published simultaneously and closely related serials divided into competing titles, certainly did not help the Marvel comic affirmation on the market.

For these reasons, after six years of productive chaos, in the spring of 1994, it was directly the overseas editorial giant to go into the field to create an Italian branch ... Marvel Italy , with the main purpose of bringing in a single Great publisher of all the package of his characters, to be able to make the most of it.

From that moment on, events took place frantically, with the opening of a headquarters in Bologna, made operational by the transfer of virtually all the ex-Star Comics editorial staff, and, following the acquisition by Marvin della Panini In 1996, the definitive settlement in that of Modena. Realizing the goal of the chronological re-alignment of the various US series and the definitive affirmation of the Marvel characters, the publishing house did not stop. Always intent on seizing the new trends of a ever-evolving market, it opened the doors to material from other American publishing houses and not.

Berserk, one of Planet Manga's greatest achievements.

The two Cult Comics and Planet Manga divisions were born. The first with material from the most famous American independent houses such as TopCow , Awesome , Event , Crusade , Harris , Avalon , and the second brought Marvel Italy home to one of the most significant phenomena of recent years, Manga , Japanese comics.

At the beginning of 1997, with the strong experience in Italy, Marvel Comics decided to own self-productions in France and Germany, coming directly to the field with its two subsidiaries Marvel France and Marvel Deutschland . After years when several publishers had followed the publication of the Marvel - Bildschriftenverlag , Williams-Verlag and Condor-Interpart material in Germany and Semic in France - the goal was the same as we had in our country: rationalizing Marvel production In respect of the series and stories up to then published. The company was not easy, but the results did not go far enough so that in these two countries began to present independent USA comics, in two divisions, similar to the Italian ones, Cult Comics and Generation Comics . 1998 was a very important year for Marvel in the world. As European divisions grew by importance and prestige, Marvel's financial situation became increasingly difficult. The House of Ideas continued to hold the primacy among comic book publishers, but because of this it suffered more than its competitors for the deep structural crisis that hit the American comic books industry in the second half of the 1990s. While on the one hand, the management team of the company was subjected to various stunts, and the Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras guaranteed continuity, pursuing a gradual renewal of the publishing program and relaunching Marvel's key characters .

In 1999, the restructuring of Marvel USA ended, and Panini's sale was decided. The ownership of Panini SpA is back in Italy, and the two companies return to separate. Panini keeps intact the executive staff who ran the company under the Marvel property, and so did the editorial division, which continues to be called Marvel Italy. In fact, Panini holds the exclusive rights to all Marvel Comics material and will continue to operate licensing in all countries of the world, excluding USA, Mexico and Canada. Under Panini, like Marvel Italy, Marvel Deuchland, Marvel France and Marvel UK continue to exist, keeping intact leadership, editorial and management. The last few years have been steadily rising, both in terms of sales and sales. The new millennium sees Marvel Italia bringing its brand to publishers of the likes of Dargaud, Wizard and Glenat. Last but not least, Japanese publishers become a fundamental point of reference for the publishing house's identity: from Kodansha to Shueisha up to Shogakukan, Planet Manga titles are rising exponentially in the Planet Manga checklist. Precisely for these reasons, it is necessary to review the identity of the publisher unlikely to be summed up in Marvel Italia as, in turn, part of Panini SpA

In 2001 the Panini Comics brand was born, under which all the brand names of the Modena publisher are joined. The same site is also transformed into www.paninicomics.it , but the change is not limited to the name. An enlarged editorial office is focusing on the Panini Comics news site every day, transforming it into the first online comic booklet, as well as a wealthy virtual shop.

Panini Comics Italia is not sure to watch, and in fact the Marvel Italia necklaces, Panini Comics and Planet Manga continue to become increasingly popular in newsstands and comics shops , alongside important special projects such as Marvel self-productions and teamwork with other publishers .

It is 2004's first story of Spider-Man completely Made in Italy , a sign of the constant desire to experience by the Modena publishing house. The success of this operation, with a "Gold Series" always with the Republic , has led Panini Comics to develop similar projects in other countries such as France, Portugal, Spain, Chile and Germany.

But not just Publishing lives on Panini Comics. Already in the middle of the first decade, the Italian section of Panini Video has resumed a speech that began a few years ago, investing in a number of important dvd contracts of the likes of Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell (alongside the German branch, already well-placed In the market thanks to animated series such as Berserk and Last Exile ).

After the success of the two series of "I Classici a Fumetti" for Republic, Panini makes two more spin-off series dedicated to two characters symbolizing the Italian comic: Diabolik and Alan Ford .
For the weekly L'Espresso , the best stories of Vittorio Giardino and Andrea Pazienza are collected in cartonized volumes. Finally, a complete work of ten volumes celebrates Hugo Pratt's Short Maltese.

With the Sun 24 hours the collection dedicated to Milo Manara was born and assisted by Vincenzo Mollica .
